Evaluation: Question 1

Thriller Opening Sequence (Final Cut)

Editing Update 7 - Borders

After editing our product, we decided to add a letterbox display to the top and bottom of the picture as this is  conventional thing to do in any film today and that it creates more tension as it decreases the space that the audience has to see within. To  do this we used an effect on Adobe Premiere Pro named 'Border'. This aloud us to add a letterbox display to our product easily and quickly. In my opinion, I prefer Letterbox as opposed to Full Screen as I feel that it is hard to concentrate to what is going on within the picture whereas with letterbox it feels that everything that is going on in the picture is diluted in a way so you have more of an idea of what is going on and is more theatrical.

Editing Update 6 - Titles

When creating the titles for the product, we decided to include all of the titles within a shot that contained the weapon of the crime which is a knife. We did this so that it would create continuity in the opening sequence. Also we decided that it would be more effective if the  titles were affected by some interaction with the knife. An example of this is the 'Starring' titles in which the titles appear after the antagonist's finger passes that area of space. We did this to interact Psychologically with the audience as it is keeps the audience within the experience and makes the antagonist seem more sinister as they are practically controlling what is gong on within their environment. This is what we mean to do within all of the other title shots to make the audience feel like the antagonist controls what they are seeing.

Editing Update 5 - Computer Generated Blood

Whilst reviewing the point of view shot of the victim staring at their blood covered hand, we noticed that the 'blood' didn't look very much like blood and would likely confuse the audience as to what the victim was getting distressed about. To fix this we attempted to add various tints to the shot but all this did was make the blood look more purple. After a while of trial and error we settled on a tint that enhanced the colour of the blood and made the blood stand out a lot more on the hand shot without effecting the entire shot. This worked immensely better than before as it is much more noticeable that it is blood and makes the shot look that much more distressing. We demonstrated the effects of this editing process to several different people who all said that the blood is much more noticable and gave the shot a lot more effect.

Editing Update 4 - Music Transitions

When we were editing we decided that the music needed smooth transitions when changing throughout the product. We realised that when we were reviewing our initial versions of our product that the music did not transition smoothly and was abruptly cut. To fix this we decided to add the effect: Constant Power so that the transition between music would be a lot smoother and would not be quick and abrupt which would likely take the viewer out of the experience.

Editing Update 3 - Music Alterations

As I stated before, the first cut soundtrack was only temporary due to the fact that we were struggling to agree on a suitable soundtrack for our product. We felt that the initial soundtrack that we used was to quiet and slow for the theme and narrative of our product so decided to search for a more fast paced and loud soundtrack. We were successful in this as we chose the song: 'Minima' by Kevin MacLeod which we used as the continuos soundtrack that would carry on through the entirety of our sequence as it was heavier, faster and louder than the music that we had previously chosen. We then chose 'Controlled Chaos' as our Antagonist music. This music would only play during the shot featuring the Antagonist as it would add more character to them and would make the audience find them that much more vile and sinister.

Editing Update 2 - Shot/Take Speed and Cropping

Based on the feedback from our first cut, we decided to cut various shots throughout our product in the hopes that we would not lee the audience's attention from the film due to overly long shots. This is very noticeable in the first three shots in which the victim is running down some stairs. Originally this sequence lasted 6 seconds which may not sound like much time at all, however this can sometimes be perceived as a longer period of time. So we decided it would be best to crop the opening seconds of our product which now lasts 3 seconds but in my opinion sounds a lot better and will not lose the attention of the audience. we did this to the majority of the shots in our product but did not do this to such an extent that it would be too short. This caused our product to be shortened from 1 minute 32 Seconds to 1 Minute 10 Seconds (not including ident and titles).

Editing Update 1 - Effects, Noise and Ghosting

As you can see in the Second of our product; the flashback scenes that were planned in our shooting script and storyboards were not present. We decided to leave these out and instead opted for a different approach. We instead decided to implement all of the Antagonist shots for a second time in the product however created a sequence with them where the music has been majorly deformed and also there is no colour in these shot plus the added affect of noise and ghosting. These effects make the Antagonist seem more menacing and are designed to make the viewers feel disturbed at what they are seeing. We took inspiration for this from Se7en as it's opening titles following a similar path with the antagonist being shown doing several disturbing and mysterious things with his hands. Also we shortened thee shots of the antagonist as we felt that they began to drag on for too long and would begin to bore the ausdience.

Thriller Opening Sequence (Second Cut)

This is the Second Cut of our Thriller opening sequence and as you can see, there have been no major changes. In the second cut the only things we have change are the opening three shots and the choice of soundtrack. We did this because we thought that the music we used in the first cut was not suitable enough so decided to choose one that was more effective towards the audience. Further changes will be addressed in future editing updates.
